Archival and Tier 0 Storage Put The Squeeze on Primary Storage
A DCIG White Paper

Organizations rely heavily on data for daily operations and decision making so they keep most data on primary storage systems for its availability, performance and reliability characteristics. But storage system technology has improved significantly in the last few years such that almost all storage systems meet today’s enterprise availability and reliability requirements. These improvements coupled with today’s economic pressures are putting a new emphasis on placing the right data on the right tier of storage. Data that is highly utilized should be stored on high performance storage media while historical or infrequently accessed data should be stored on lower performing, lower cost storage media.

The problem today is that most corporate data resides on high-performing and costly primary storage even though only a small portion of this data is highly active. To begin to solve this issue, organizations need to stratify their data based on utilization and access. By doing so, they will free up primary storage space and reduce their annual primary storage expansion costs. Moving data off of primary storage and into an archive can decrease the floor space, power and cooling costs that primary storage incurs and also mitigate backup and recovery inefficiencies, reduce backup infrastructure costs and reduce backup traffic on the network.

Two new types of storage systems at the high and low end are emerging to help facilitate this stratification of data. Tier 0 is the new high end and consists of solid-state disk (SSD). SSD is growing in acceptance among enterprise shops as the new ultra-high performance storage media for production data. On the other end, disk-based archival storage systems are being deployed to store static data. Today’s tough economic conditions demand that organizations choose the technologies that are best positioned to help them meet their budgetary and technical goals.

Case Study

Penson Financial Services, Inc. (PFSI), based in Dallas, Texas, is a leading financial services firm that provides flexible, technology-based processing solutions for the execution, clearing, custody and settlement of securities transactions. As a highly regulated company, they face significant challenges in maintaining and making readily available the growing volumes of data it must retain over long periods of time. Its previous reliance on storing data on removable media was no longer viable from either a cost or usability perspective. Penson turned to Permabit Enterprise Archive™ for its long-term, cost effective, secure, highly available data retention solution.

“We initially purchased the Permabit solution to handle compliance and data retrieval issues. A dedicated IT member for these requests was proving to be a costly and inefficient proposition. With Permabit, the speed of retrieval has been off the charts. Basically what took 2–3 days now takes a few minutes. With Permabit, we have been able to move the majority of our data to a value tier while keeping it all online. This allows business users across the organization to access the data themselves, taking IT completely out of the loop which represents a significant cost savings while freeing up valuable resources." —Matt Pittman, Vice President, MIS Infrastructure, Penson Financial Services
