Digital Archive Software and Permabit Enterprise Archive Combine to Benefit Microsoft Windows,
Mac OS X, Linux and Unix Users
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and PALO ALTO, Calif. – July 29, 2008 –
Permabit Technology Corporation, the industry’s leading innovator of scalable, data-reduced
storage for enterprise archiving, and Atempo, a leading provider of cross-platform data
protection and archiving solutions, today announced they have entered into a technology
partnership. The companies recently completed interoperability testing of the Atempo Digital
Archive (ADA) file archiving software solution with the Permabit Enterprise Archive disk-based
storage system.
The technology partnership between Permabit and Atempo provides enterprise customers a
reliable and massively scalable archive solution that’s cost-effective and always available
across the industry’s broadest range of NAS devices and operating platforms— including
Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Unix. The joint solution offers customers flexibility
in how and when they archive their files to Permabit’s advanced disk-based storage system.
ADA offers traditional administrator-managed, policy-based archiving capabilities, and
also empowers end-users by providing built-in user-initiated archiving capabilities. It
also offers two ways to archive information. First, automated archiving and file movement
is triggered based on policies pre-defined by the administrator. Alternatively, the end-user
can use a dedicated interface to drag and drop files to file shares on the Permabit Enterprise
Archive. Both archiving methods utilize the open standard NFS and CIFS interfaces.
“Since most large IT environments are not standardized on a single operating system platform,
heterogeneous platform support is becoming a critical buying criterion for file system
archiving solutions. We’re especially seeing an uptick in Mac adoption in the enterprise.
There is a massive market need for joint vendor solutions that support multi-platform data
archiving,” George Crump, president and senior analyst at Storage Switzerland, explained.
“The Permabit and Atempo partnership addresses this growing need while giving companies
the flexibility and efficiency to allow their end-users to archive data on demand.”
Atempo Digital Archive and Permabit Enterprise Archive provide a simple, reliable, cost-effective,
and unified solution that addresses the massive storage requirements of content archives.
The ADA application can store a variety of data types in a single massively scalable Permabit
Enterprise Archive. The Permabit solution ensures long-term integrity of stored information
for large enterprises and dramatically reduces operating expenses by leveraging patent-pending
Scalable Data Reduction technology, which combines sub-file in-line deduplication with
traditional compression. Permabit’s flexible and scalable grid storage architecture enables
customers to start with one archive initiative and quickly and easily add data sources
and content types to the system. In addition, as data capacity requirements grow, additional
storage can be seamlessly added without impacting the functioning system.
“We’re excited to partner with a company as technologically innovative as Atempo. Our
open architecture allows seamless interaction with thousands of applications. The recent
interoperability testing validates that Permabit solutions are fully compatible with Atempo.
This gives our joint customers the assurance that they can archive from almost any platform
to a storage system that is purpose-built to retain their data indefinitely and have it
retrievable at a moment’s notice,” said Tom Cook, CEO, Permabit.
ADA software simplifies the process of long-term data retention for mid-market and larger
organizations by providing critical features such as metadata and full content indexing
and search capabilities; a utility that identifies inactive, fixed-content data as ready
for archive; and multiple methods for archiving, including:
-
Traditional hierarchical storage management functionality, which moves files into the
archive based on a defined set of criteria and leaves a stub in primary storage to enable
easy retrieval of an archived file
-
User-initiated archiving integrated into the end-user desktop, which enables users
to archive fixed content data by simply dragging and dropping it into the archive folder
of their choice, and
-
Policy-based data movement, which enables administrators to establish rules dictating
specified files to be automatically moved into the archive as required by internal policies
“Together, ADA and Permabit Enterprise Archive deliver a powerful solution that solidifies
the long-term retention policies of data-intensive organizations,” said Neal Ater, CEO
of Atempo. “The combined technology is optimized for customers that require comprehensive
and standardized storage support to archive and protect massive amounts of data across
any and all complex platforms – particularly beneficial to data-heavy industries like media/entertainment,
government and education. Permabit’s unique scalability technology and Atempo’s comprehensive
file archive tools will allow these organizations to archive all of their critical long-term
projects at all tiers of storage and let them access specific types of data at various
points of time as a job requires.”
